What a crazy day! Special thank you to Ron Sittler for bring Jersey Mikes Sandwiches for the whole camp! After a morning of hard work preparing for our concert tomorrow, we had our annual camp water games. Campers were broken up into four teams: team Hawaii, team Fiji, team Bahamas, and team Cancun. We played a ton of different games that involved getting soaked! Next, we enjoyed some ice cream to cool off. Finally we ended our day with an awesome performance by the PoBoy Trio who played some Old Time American Music. We were ALL on our feet dancing to the music! Tomorrow is the last day of camp. We are looking forward to a great concert! Please join us at PS1 at 3:00pm to come support these amazing kids!

Thank you UCLA Mariachi Ensemble for sharing your beautiful music with us! Camp is almost over, but we have a couple of surprises for tomorrow...stay tuned! Day 12: Connor and James from Dustbowl Revival joined us as we explored the world of Bluegrass Music! Alongside the performers, the kids listened and improvised with their instruments. Connor also gave an awesome demonstration on wah-wah pedals, a musical pedal that alters the tone and frequencies of sound. Day 11: The campers showed us their creativity in art class with a Sumi Nagashi activity, Japanese Water Painting. Also, today was the first day that the younger choir kids grabbed their instruments and practiced with the full orchestra! The kids are practicing hard for our concert on Friday. We can't wait to see everyone there! We can't believe that its already the end of week 2! Time has been flying by! We ended our week with full orchestra practice of "Once You Go Up." The choir and the orchestra played together for the first time. Also, the choir had a chance to try out conducting in front of the whole orchestra. We can't wait to see everyone for Week 3! Aloha! Day 9 was full of excitement and laughter! We had a beautiful Hawaiian music and dance performance by Sisa Grey Uiagalelei and her family. With ukuleles in hand and flowers in our hair, the whole camp hula danced and sang along with Sisa. We also learned the meaning of "Aloha" and " "Ohana" and became a stronger music family because of it. What an adventure we had hiking in Temescal Canyon! We took the Big Blue Bus to the hike and had lunch on a huge green lawn. To cool off from the heat, we sat and learned the three parts of the "Lava Song." Together, we walked up to a small waterfall and bridge and saw a gorgeous view! Tomorrow, we have a Hawaiian Ensemble coming to camp! So, wear your hula skirts and bring your ukuleles! We danced our hearts out today learning Afro-Brazillian Capoeira with Simon and Bobby! Capoeira is a mixture of dance and martial, so the kids had a blast and also worked up a sweat. We also finished our Sumie japanese art projects and practiced hard on our three pieces! Tomorrow we have our Temescal Canyon Hike Field Trip! Please wear your yellow camp shirt and a disposable sack lunch. See you then! It was wonderful to see all of the camper's faces again after the weekend and to welcome some new friends to camp! Scott Reiker, our choir director, jumped into camp ready to work on "Once You Go Up." We listened to some unique Ghanaian Xylophone Music performed by SK Kakraba followed by a fun Sumie art project, led by Sachi Yoshimoto! Week 2 has started off on a good note! Tomorrow, we have a Afro-Brazilian Capoeira group coming, so wear comfortable clothes to dance in! Day 5: What a beautiful day at the Getty Museum! It was so much fun jumping on a school bus, eating lunch in the garden, and exploring the various exhibits. We also sported our awesome camp t-shirts, designed by Courtney Takahashi! It has been an amazing first week with all of the students. We are looking forward to two more weeks of music, friendships, and fun! |
